Boom times for the cosmetic surgery industry?

BAAPS have just published their own figures for 2013 and it seems to be good news for the cosmetic surgery industry. Overall, the number of procedures has risen by 10 per cent over the last year, with liposuction proving the boom procedure, up by 41 per cent on the previous year.

In recent years, the recession has hit the cosmetic surgery industry hard, as patients stayed away from the operating table. Whether it’s a general feeling that the economic bad times are behind us or whether it’s the case that men and women are turning to cosmetic surgery to give them the edge in a tougher, more competitive job market, who knows.

Confidence in the cosmetic surgery industry was also shaken by the PIP scandal which was thought to have affected tens of thousands of women in the UK. The majority of PIP implants were inserted by the big cosmetic surgery chains so maybe the rise in the figures of BAAPS members is down to patients rethinking their surgeon choice.

The industry was worth £750m in the UK in 2005, £2.3bn in 2010 and is forecast to reach £3.6bn by 2015.
